Come enjoy the fall foliage and beautiful autumn scenery at AMC’s 2015 Fall Gathering on historic Lake George!

The 2015 Fall Gathering will be held October 16-18 and is being hosted by the Mohawk Hudson Chapter. Join AMC members from all chapters at Camp Chingachgook, nestled along the shore of gorgeous Lake George in the Adirondack Mountains.  

All AMC members and their friends are invited to enjoy this fun annual event! Activities will include hikes to the numerous peaks that surround Lake George, cycling, and paddling (bring your own kayak). Friday and Saturday evenings feature pre-dinner social hours, live music and campfires. 

Local History: Lake George was an important passageway through the mountains and wilderness in the early history of the country. Fort William Henry, built by the British at the southern end of the lake, and Fort Ticonderoga, built by the French as Fort Carillon just north of the lake, were sites of major battles in the French & Indian Wars. 

Lake George Battlefield Campground and Rogers Rock State Campground are on land for which Indians and colonists fought during the mid 18th century. James Fenimore Cooper set parts of The Last of the Mohicans at Fort William Henry in Lake George Village and Coopers Cave in nearby Glens Falls. Our camp is named after the Cooper hero, Chingachgook.

Artists Alfred Stieglitz, Georgia O’Keeffe, and David Smith lived on the western shores during the summers in the 20th century. Georgia O’Keeffe stayed at the historic Wiawaka Lodge, created in 1903 as a holiday home for the city of Troy, NY’s mill girls. On this site, the Trask family founded an early version of the artist colony Yaddo, where O’Keefe was a young artist on scholarship before her more famous association with Alfred Stieglitz. Marcella Sembrich, late 19th to early 20th century opera star, had her summer home on the Lake, and in 1962 the Lake George Opera Festival was founded here. Now, Lake George is a major recreational area, drawing tourists to its scenic beauty from around the world.

Registration for this event is on a first come, first served basis. Please contact Susannah Hatch (shatch@outdoors.org) with any special requests for lodging (such as lodging near other registrants) or dietary concerns. Registration for this event closes at 11:59PM (EST) on October 1, 2015.

Payment in full is required at the time of registration. Cancellations with a full refund (minus a $25 processing fee) are allowed until 11:59PM on October 1st. No refunds will be issued for cancellations after October 1st.

What are the shower facilities?
There are two heated shower/toilet facilities that are located among our cabins. Rockwell Cabin has 2 showers (co-ed);  Brookside East shower house has 3 men’s and 3 women’s showers.

There are also two unheated shower houses. Note the unheated shower houses have hot water for showers and sinks.  The Brookside West shower house has 3 men’s and 3 women’s showers. 

Plan your shower times accordingly!

Do I need to bring linens?
Yes, bring your own pillow, bed linens/blankets, sleeping bag, towels, toiletries, flash light, and reading light.

Are there offsite options?
Lake George Village has many commercial options from national chains, to resorts, to mom and pop motels. The LG Chamber of Commerce will show you the breadth of options. Lake George Village is about a 20 minute drive from Camp Chingachgook.

The offsite lodging option includes 6 meals and social events/entertainment.  The cost is the same for one or two nights offsite.

Are meals for special diets available during the weekend?
The camp culinary staff is experienced in special dietary needs.  Indicate your requirements at the time of registration. 

Is refrigeration available?
Yes, there is a refrigerator in Rockwell.

Is smoking permitted?
No, the campus is smoke free.

Are pets allowed?
No animals other than certified service animals are allowed on campus.

What is the alcoholic beverage policy?
You are welcome to bring wine or beer to be consumed by persons 21 years of age and over to social hours and dinner.  Complimentary wine will be served at the Friday and Saturday pre-dinner social hours.  Please do not take alcoholic beverages into the cabins or consume them on the grounds.

Where is the parking?
There is parking for about 100 cars just inside the camp gate.  MH volunteers will be on hand to assist you in parking and locating your cabin.  The cabins are not accessible by car so you must move your gear hand or by wheelbarrow to the cabins.

Is there Wi-Fi and cell phone service in the camp?
There is Wi-Fi in the Rotary Lodge and the Lewi Dining Hall.

Cell phone service is spotty throughout the camp.

Is there a place to launch a canoe or kayak?
Yes, there is a public launch site just adjacent to the camp, Fort Ann Public Beach, from which you can put in your kayak or boat.  Please be aware that Lake George is a large body of water subject to change in winds and weather throughout the day with varying sized motorized boats.  Paddling close to shore and in coves is highly recommended; do not venture into the middle on the lake.
